In 2022, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and Southern California Regional Energy Network (SoCalREN) invited us to produce our first live Energy Battle Royale at the Future Green Leaders Summit at the LA Convention Center. Our goal was to teach more than 900 middle school students how various energy sources contribute to powering the world, and encourage them to explore careers in the energy and sustainability sectors.

Students were given custom Energy Battle Royale trading cards introducing each energy source and its strengths prior to engaging in the interactive Energy Battle Royale, a 45-minute performance blending educational theater with pro-wrestling-style showmanship. After witnessing the characters perform dance and rap battles, the students voted with their cheers and applause for the energy source they thought should power the future.

The Energy Battle Royale quickly became the youth summit’s featured attraction. Now in its third year of partnership with SoCalREN, the program has reached thousands of students at school districts in Los Angeles, Burbank, Pasadena, San Bernardino, Rialto, and Lancaster among others.

Teachers and superintendents regularly tell us how impactful the program is and how student conversations about energy continue long after the event ends. What educators value most is that the Energy Battle Royale gives students an accessible introduction to the future of sustainable energy.

Whether it’s a rap battle between Ethanol and Biogas, Geothermal and Nuclear hugging it out after a heated dance-off, or Wind and Tidal hyping the crowd before the next round, students connect with the “animated” versions of these technologies and come away with a clearer understanding of their role in our energy future.
